The Neo-Baroque villa that houses Vadrózsa today was built nearly a century ago, based on the designs of the era’s renowned star architect, Tivadar Kocsis. According to local lore on Rózsadomb, the house was once owned by Sándor Gärtner—also known as Jenő Gerő—one of the most celebrated cabaret authors and actors of the period. While the distinguished artist enjoyed remarkable success at home, the horrors of World War II forced him to flee to the United States. There, adopting the stage name S.Z. Sakall (affectionately known as “Cuddles”), he landed a role in one of the greatest films of all time, Casablanca. Portraying Carl the waiter, a key figure in the movie, he won the hearts of audiences worldwide.
To this day, Vadrózsa Restaurant pays respectful tribute to his memory and to all Hollywood celebrities of Hungarian origin.
